Random Geekery: Who’s Your Hero?

Standard

I found this using Google Search and it’s linked back to the site I found it on.

I’ve been talking with people A LOT about this lately, what with the new Batman movie out and the new Superman movie in the works. I will be the first to tell you that I used to be a SNOB about Batman, and I thought anyone who didn’t like him was Superlame. They were even MORE lame if they liked *gasp* Superman. I would yell and scream and stamp my foot, trying to beat it through someone’s head that Batman was obviously the best choice in hero. Not only was he awesome, but his villains and story lines just couldn’t be beat. By anyone. Ever. Even if the super awesome writers who made some of my favorite Batman stories wrote for another hero, I just didn’t care because it wasn’t BATMAN. But hey, I was kind of an angry, judgmental youth.

Somehow, without really realizing it, I’ve come to the conclusion that superheros, regardless of who they are, are created to speak more to certain people. Some people fall in love with Superman because THAT’S what it meant to be a hero when they were a kid. Some fell for Spider-Man, Green Lantern, the X-Men, Wonder Woman, whoever. These people have read all of these stories, and something about them resonates and makes their heart sing. And you know what? THAT’S THE WHOOOOOOLE POINT. I get it now. So many people yell and scream and stamp their feet trying to prove that their hero is the best, and it honestly just doesn’t matter. (Although I’m not saying that a healthy, courteous albeit heated debate from time to time isn’t fun. We geeks LOVE to debate. But actually reaching the point of anger or hate doesn’t help anyone.)

What matters is that some kid found a hero in someone. Kids need heroes. I loved my Saturday morning cartoons, and I was lucky enough to grow up with the awesome 80s-90s cartoons:  Spider-Man, X-Men,Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, G.I. Joe, Transformers, and even Captain Planet. They all made me want to fight crime and kick the baddies butts, come out on top and high five my friends.  I remember playing Ninja Turtles with my brother and taping our fingers together so we would only have 3 fingers, whacking at each other and screaming COWABUNGA. We played Captain Planet, and no one EVER wanted to be the Heart guy. We made our mom take us to the comic book store every week so we could get the new issues of whatever we were craving at the time. We would let our imaginations soar, and it was amazing. I don’t think we would have had half as much fun if it wasn’t for these cartoons and comics.

Then we grew up. People still loved comics and cartoons, but all of a sudden we were super opinionated and belittled one another when we didn’t agree. That needs to stop. Especially with all of this talk about whether or not ladies can be geeks (WHICH WE TOTALLY CAN, AND I’M DAMN PROUD OF IT, THANK YOU VERY MUCH INTERNET. In case you missed it: this more or less started things and this is the best thing in the history of ever). I also think that everyone should be allowed to love their own heroes, because heroes go straight to the heart of things, and maybe one kid needed a hero stronger than life that could fly because they wanted to and couldn’t. Another kid may have believed in someone that could overcome adversity and save a city because they had a crummy childhood and couldn’t see a way out. Let people have their heroes, and please stop telling other people that they’re wrong. You can’t be wrong when it comes to what you love.

PS – I’m still fervently on Team Batman.

PPS – I also love the Joker. A lot. A lot a lot. And Harley and Ivy and the rest of them. It’s possible I’ve grown into a Super Villain lover. Which is also okay!!

A Wee Bit of Life and WonderCon 2012

Hello all! I know it’s been a long time since I’ve written a post, but I’ve been busy and not very crafty. The boyfriend and I finally found a nice 2 bedroom apartment so I can have a studio, in hopes of actually making something of all this..making. But, as you can see, it looks like a bomb blew up in there, so I need to find a way to organize it so I can buy shelving to, well, organize it. AHHHHH. You can see my dilemma. I’m hacking away at it bit by bit, but it’s difficult going. Hope to have positive things to say soon!

Woooooo look at all that FUN I have in store!

WOOOOO WONDERCON 2012 TIME!

The Nerdist panel

So, I actually had a REALLY good time at WonderCon! Last year at Comic-Con, I was a bit out of sorts with the size of the crowd and it overwhelmed me at times. Saturday at WonderCon was busy, but nothing like Comic-Con, and Friday and Sunday were *gloriously* under-crowded. We even got to hang out and wander with friends! It was awesome. I managed to catch the Nerdist panel about his upcoming YouTube station, as well as the Geek & Sundry panel about their upcoming YouTube station. Between you and me, I think Felicia Day might be more successful than Chris Hardwick, simply because she doesn’t seem to be stretching herself as thing at her 5 shows verses his 12 (or however many). She can concentrate on her 5 shows (which, by the way, sound freaking AMAZING!!!!) and make them perfect, and take expansion one step at a time. I was really only super-stoked with The Tournament of Nerds on the Nerdist channel, but maybe I’m not nerdy enough for the Nerdist? Who knows.

Geek & Sundry panel!

Now comes the best part of the whole shebang – COSPLAY! I never go super picture crazy with the cosplayers, but I did get a couple of awesome ones. And I got so many ideas of costumes I want to make when I finally get my studio up and running, man I need my sewing machine set up!! And hours and hours to knit – YES I’M GOING TO KNIT A COSPLAY COSTUME and it’s going to be fantastic if I can pull it off. But for now, here are everyone else’s magical costumes!

This is the best Joker costume I have ever seen. Costume designed and worn by Anthony Misiano.

Holy Doppelgangers, Batman!

This just makes me so happy I can't stand it. Sheldon and his ball pit!! 🙂

The most fearsome Dalek in the galaxy.

That’s about it from me. I think they’re all kinds of adorable and amazing and I really, really, really hope I can get my act together on at least one of my ideas so I can have some fun at Comic-Con.

I have a MIGHTY NEED!

Standard

I did not make this. I Googled "Invader Zim Mighty Need gif" and this was the first option.

…To make something RIDICULOUSLY glittery and blinged out. The only problem is that I don’t have any glitter. Or rhinestones. Or really, any plain whatever to then bling out. So what I really need is a cheap resource for rhinestones (plastic crap is TOTALLY fine for this project!) and glitter. I *do* have a couple ideas of what I *could* bling out. Here they are:

This would be done Dia de los Muertos style, with the rhinestones making the swirls and flowers.

I don’t really know which one I want to do. They’re all REALLY GOOD options. I think the jar would eventually turn into a bitty cute vase of some kind. I also have absolutely NO IDEA why I want to bling the hell out of something. If anyone has any ideas of other typical house type things, or things that could be cheaply obtained via thrift store or dollar store that I could attack with rhinestones and glitter, PLEASE HELP A GAL OUT!

I know I only have like 3 readers, but if y’all want to vote, please feel free! It might help me make up my mind. Otherwise I might go into a bling haze and the apartment might turn into a whirlwind of glitter. I don’t know how the SO would like that…. *sheepish grin*

THE cutest apple juice bottle, ever. Compliments of The Monster In Your Closet 🙂

Something cute I found on clearance at Michael's.

This. All the time.

My friend just emailed this to me, and I just had to share. It’s from a tumblr? blog? that takes excerpts from the Twilight books and points out their blaring grammatical, syntax, or just plain stupid mistakes and horrible writing. And it gives you excellent examples of why Darkwing Duck is THE BEST 90s CARTOON EVAR. (or at least why it’s in my top 5)

This. All the time.
